As a proud member of the enoa network, the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme (BPYAP) exists to improve accessibility to excellent training for exceptional young artists across Europe.
Now more than ever, this platform supports vital professional integration of the most talented young artists and their development. With the backing of the European Commission’s Culture Programme and Creative Europe programme since 2016, enoa has been working to train emerging artists and promote their mobility, while encouraging the creation and performance of new operas, as well as the cultivation of new audiences all over Europe.
At Snape Maltings through the BPYAP, we have hosted enoa artists from all over Europe and in turn any Britten–Pears Young Artist is eligible to attend any enoa course offered by the network at no cost to themselves. In a rapidly changing industry, where the role of creation, the development of new forms, the exploration of innovative creative processes and audience renewal are among the major challenges for opera professionals, the issue of the training and occupational integration of young creators and performers is of crucial importance.
The Young Opera Makers programme aims to give them the keys to their occupational integration and international career by offering them excellent training, with an interdisciplinary and contemporary approach to opera, enabling them to perform and experience creative processes, and increase their visibility and access to international recruitment circuits.
We are enoa: thirteen-member institutions, over a thousand young artists and some three hundred professionals all over Europe.
ENOA Projects at Snape Maltings
The 21st Century Singer
Two legendary vocal coaches join forces: John Fisher, Head of Music at the Metropolitan Opera, and Julia Faulkner, whose student list reads like a “who’s who” of international opera houses.
Together with acclaimed bass Matthew Rose, this stellar team of tutors will examine what it means to be a singer in the 21st century and ask how we can lead the profession in the future. The course embraces teaching traditions, approaches and values from both sides of the Atlantic – it comprises intensive coaching in 1:1 sessions, public masterclasses and will culminate in a recital as part of the Aldeburgh Festival.
Serbian composer Jug Marković was invited by Snape Maltings to work on his project incidAnces. His Residency was mentored by English composer Michael Finnissy.
The Unknown Girl of the Seine
Wavering between dream and consciousness, between fantasy and thriller, L’Inconnue de la Seine (working title) is a new opera in the making that reflects society’s deep relationship with images of death and beauty. An opera for soprano, actor and small ensemble.
Strauss Lieder & Arias
Alongside Angelika Kirchschlager, pianist Malcolm Martineau rejoined the artistic team of the workshop in an unmissable opportunity to explore both the luxuriant late romantic Lied and operatic arias of one of the great vocal composers of the twentieth century.
The Sleeping Thousand
On their residency at Snape Maltings and the Red House in Aldeburgh, composer Adam Maor and writer Yonatan Levy work on adapting the text from a novel to a libretto, with the help of dramaturg Noam Brusilovsky.
The Sleeping Thousand is a work treating the socio-political predicament in Israel Palestine, with the Orphic themes of underworld, yearning and redemption – as its basis and point of departure.
French Grand Opera & Mélodie
Laurent Naouri, Natalie Dessay and Roger Vignoles led a week-long enoa workshop at Snape Maltings.
A rare opportunity for the participants to work with the legendary husband-and-wife duo and the vocal coach Roger Vignoles in masterclasses exploring the uniquely colourful world of 19th century French opera.
