YUM! A Feast for the Eyes

September 23 - September 29

Monday – Saturday, 10am – 5pm / Sunday, 10am – 4pm

The Quay Gallery, Snape Maltings

A thought provoking exhibition of remarkable photographs that use the traditions of the classical masters, but with a modern touch.

Shelley returns to the Quay Gallery with her remarkable and thought provoking photographs with food and nature at their heart. As an Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival Fringe Event her exhibition is a firm favourite for lovers of food and of art.

She is a photographer with a growing reputation for her striking still lifes and is absorbed in the world of slow photography. Each of her photographs is painstakingly composed using the traditions of the classical masters, but with a modern touch. She manipulates window light to tease out the beauty and texture of her subject – be it an elegant rose or a common cabbage. Her on-going research, which takes her around Europe, is reflected in her exhibitions.

“Nature is so astounding and I do what I can to reveal the beauty without the use of artificial light, just as the masters would have done.” Shelley says “And like those masters, I will often include subtle messages within the photograph which may not be obvious at first glance.”

Although digitally photographed, Shelley uses her computer to perform only those tasks she would have done when she worked in the darkroom using large format film. There is no digital manipulation, the photographs are as seen through the lens.

“Yum! A Feast for the Eyes” is a coming together of the two popular pastimes at Snape Maltings – nature and art.
