This year’s theme for Sue Lancaster’s work will be ‘STILL’, a word which influences her work in many ways: She is still producing after 40+ years as a textile artist specialising in machine embroidery. In order to work from observation of her source material (often water or natural form) an inner stillness is needed. To draw accurately with an extremely fast sewing machine a calm approach is required, still hands and a steady gaze. Sue’s pieces involve interpretations of her original drawings into a range of machine embroidery techniques, sometimes marrying synthetic and natural fibred fabrics. Surfaces are created, sometimes stretched and framed as decorative pieces for domestic interiors and sometimes built into functional items such as bags or jackets for books. This year Sue has a plan to also explore building vessels in a more sculptural than functional way.
