No two days at Aldeburgh Young Musicians are the same! The programme is a tailored & evolving process that exposes our Young Artists to a wide variety of musical experiences and opportunities.

From our weekend activities you can expect to receive a combination of 1-1 tuition or duo coaching with a specialist tutor, ensemble sessions, open classes and musicianship training. We also make sure to factor in holistic sessions to help our students understand their feelings around the psychology of performing, as well as emphasising the importance of their health and well-being. Weekends feature vocal work, where AYMs discover how to use their voices to develop their skillsets as musicians. There’s also free jam time available to students who’d like to create together in a safe and fun environment, as well as social activities.

Projects offer immersive residencies, focusing on a specific area of music over the course of five days. Previous topics have included the likes of Chamber, Jazz Fusion, Folk & Brazilian music. Projects are delivered by leading professional artists in the given area to deliver the course. Throughout the week they’ll guide the young artists to broaden their understanding of the genre and how to relate it to their field of study. They’ll also learn about the history of the genre and any key developments in its making. This then culminates in an Open Session performance at the end of the week which is also open to the public.

Aldeburgh Young Musicians is committed to supporting our young artists throughout their musical journey with us. An essential part of this process is to produce an Individual Training Plan each academic year between the AYM’s, their parents/carers and AYM management. The ITP sets agreed benchmarks for success and provides an opportunity to discuss any additional opportunities to support musical development. The ITP allows AYMs to share their personal interests which enables AYM management to ensure that activities are pertinent, engaging and enjoyable for the cohort.

We also offer external opportunities such as meet and greets with visiting Artists, open rehearsals and side by side playing opportunities with showcased acts in our Performance programme, including participation in events such as Aldeburgh Carnival, Celebration, and in collaboration with other local arts organisations. We want AYMs to feel part of the Britten Pears family and come to as many shows at BPA as possible.

FAQs

AYM is a place for music students that don’t want to be put in a box. No problem with boxes, but some people are just not made for them. In this sense, AYM provides a wide range of opportunities for their students, helping them to choose their own musical paths drawing inspiration from experienced tutors from all walks of life.

Where we stay

Aldeburgh Young Musicians has exclusive use of accommodation whilst in residence. Most regularly this is at our own artist accommodation Elizabeth Court, based in the beautiful seaside town of Aldeburgh. The accommodation has a communal kitchen and living room area, plus a private garden. The AYMs are allocated bedrooms, sharing in pairs or trios of a similar age, some of the bedrooms even have sea views! AYM has a dedicated team of Chaperones who cover the night shift, ensuring the AYMs are safe, happy and well cared for.

During the evenings AYMs are allowed windows of free time to explore Aldeburgh. The AYMs also enjoy movie nights, brownie bake-offs in the kitchen, takeaway dinners (provided by AYM) and the occasional trip to the cinema or circus.

AYMs are transported by coach between Snape Malting and Elizabeth Court. All meals are provided for the duration of AYM activities.
