Clarinet tutor
James Meldrum is principal clarinet of the New European Ensemble in the Netherlands specialising in contemporary music and music from the 20th century.
He has recorded extensively for Halidon label and most recent releases include works for clarinet and piano by Debussy, Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time and Steve Reich Double Sextet.
James performed in the most prestigious venues and concert series throughout the USA, Europe, Far East and Australia as well as being featured regularly on NPO2 television and NPO4 Radio in the Netherlands.
He collaborates with the most prominent composers of 21st century including Bright Sheng, Mark Anthony Turnage, Magnus Lindberg, Kaija Saariaho, Kate Moore, Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, Jurg Frey, Jurg Widmann and Dai Fujikura to name but a few and has performed many premieres of their chamber and solo works worldwide.
Along with his colleagues from NEuE, James teaches contemporary performance and composition in the Koninklijk Conservatorium, The Hague and Amsterdam Conservatiore. He has also been involved extensively with the London Symphony Orchestras Discovery programme and tutored on side-by-side schemes with Dorset opera and Aldeburgh Festival Orchestra.
