Claire Booth: “An actor-singer who can raise the dramatic heat as soon as she enters the stage” (Opera Now), “that most questing, resourceful and intelligent of sopranos” (Daily Telegraph), British soprano Claire Booth has been widely acclaimed for her “radiant, rapturous, wonderfully nuanced performances” and voice of “piercing purity [and] luscious richness” (The Scotsman). She is renowned for her breadth of repertoire, and for the vitality and musicianship that she brings to the operatic stage and concert platform, with a versatility that encompasses repertoire spanning from Monteverdi and Handel, through Rossini, Berg and Britten, to a fearless commitment to the music of the present day.

Alisdair Hogarth: With a prominent background in both solo and song-accompaniment, Alisdair Hogarth is a versatile pianist combining a robust technique with a fresh, contemporary approach. He made his concerto debut in 1996 as soloist with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and has since performed with a variety of orchestras, including tours of Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Hogarth has broadcast for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM. Performances have included recitals at Wigmore Hall, concerts at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, Cadogan Hall, Bridgewater Hall and Philharmonic Hall, as well as recitals for international festivals.

Committed to song-accompaniment, Hogarth is the Director and pianist of The Prince Consort. They made their Wigmore Hall debut in 2009 in which they were joined by Graham Johnson. Their first recording for Linn, Ned Rorem – On an echoing road –, was GramophoneEditor’s Choice in addition to being named ‘Outstanding’ in International Record Review. The Prince Consort are Associate Artists of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama’s Vocal Department.

Hogarth studied privately with Philip Fowke and at the Royal College of Music with John Blakely where he won the major prizes for piano accompaniment. He acknowledges the kind and generous support of Simon Yates, and Philip and Christine Carne. Hogarth is a Steinway Artist.

Jason Rebello: Legendary British jazz pianist Jason Rebello was labelled a veteran by critics at 19 and has won most of the major jazz music awards including Album of the Year 2016: “At 21, he’s probably the most gifted and fluent pianist to emerge in Britain since Django Bates” (Jazz FM 1990). Classically trained but inspired by Herbie Hancock, he came to the attention of saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and following the untimely death in 1998 of piano legend and personal hero Kenny Kirkland, Jason was invited by Sting to take his seat in the band. Jason recorded with Sting on his Grammy winning album Brand New Day 1999 and Sacred Love 2003. Despite a global performance schedule,

Jason continues to teach, lecturing at various schools and music colleges including GSM and Bath Spa University. He also helped to set up the Jazz Factory at the Wiltshire Music Centre.

Schumann’s Frauenliebe, Reimagined. This residency sees singer Claire Booth, classical pianist Alisdair Hogarth and Jazz legend Jason Rebello bring extraordinary musicianship to bear on the frontiers between Jazz and Classical Music. Having long been fascinated by the intersection between different areas of music, the residency provides these musicians the opportunity to explore Schumann’s pivotal song cycle, Frauenliebe und Leben, reinterpreting this work through a prism of musical styles, combining and contrasting both new and existing harmonies which further both the emotional journey and musical landscape. In so doing, this residency hopes to explore additional ways of both presenting and absorbing classical repertoire, to the benefit of performers and audience alike.
