Mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean sings works for amplified solo voice with electronics and tape. From Luigi Nono's groundbreaking 1964 piece La fabbrica illuminata to new works by Mathis Saunier, Stuart MacRae and Linda Buckley.
Voice Electric is a revival of Lotte’s highly-charged debut at the 2022 Aldeburgh Festival. Inspired by her lifelong fascination with electronic music, she creates a fusion of solo voice and fixed media as she celebrates the possibilities of their interaction. She performs works by the trailblazing composers Nono, Scelsi and Feldman, and 21st-century pieces that draw on medieval plainchant, experimental hip-hop and breakcore.
This performance is an audiovisual collaboration between Lotte Betts-Dean and Purple Taiko.
Purple Taiko is a Bristol-based audiovisual artist that explores analogue techniques through video art, CRT (TVs), and modular synths. She processes and manipulates sound and visuals in unison with one another, whether in a live context, installation or online.
Using various formats and equipment such as CRT monitors, hardware, circuit bent synths, VHS players, and other processing tools; she films and distorts visuals and sound through to create a visual collage of lofi-imagery, glitches textures and colour.
Working on varying projects, her work has been featured in documentaries and productions from Resident Advisor, Dr Martens, VUSE, and Redbull and across events such as Glastonbury, BLOC, Mira and Arnolfini.
