We are proud to be the chosen charity for this year’s Aldeburgh Marmalade Competition, organised by Salter & King Craft Butcher. A long-standing institution in Aldeburgh, Salter & King is renowned for its exceptional local produce and its commitment to supporting the community. Each February, their Aldeburgh Marmalade Competition tempts the great and good of East Suffolk to their preserving pans in the hope of winning the coveted Marmalade Cup. ‘It’s a serious affair!’ says Gerard King, owner of Salter & King. ‘But really, it’s a chance to bring the community together for the prize-giving gathering held in early March at The Suffolk and, of course, to raise money for our chosen charity.’
Every year, all proceeds from both the sale of Seville oranges and the competition entry fee (£5 per jar) go to a local charity, and this year, Gerard has chosen to support the Britten Pears Arts Criminal Justice Music Programme at HMP Warren Hill. ‘My wife went to a concert at Warren Hill last Autumn put on by the prisoners with help from the BPA music programme and found it completely inspiring. She spent some time talking to the performers afterwards and was moved to hear how much the music-making initiative lifted their spirits and gave them a vehicle to voice not only their creativity but, at times, some of their more complicated emotions. It seems like a really worthwhile cause.’
Entries come from far and wide - if you’d like to enter a jar into the Aldeburgh Marmalade Competition 2025, please drop it off before 28 February to Salter & King, 107 Aldeburgh High Street or phone 01728 452758 for more details. Entries are £5 per jar and participants will be warmly welcomed at the awards ceremony in The Suffolk in early March. All proceeds to the Britten Pears Arts Criminal Justice Music Programme at HMP Warren Hill.
