An expansive piece by the celebrated American composer and violinist Jessie Montgomery is paired with Ravel’s Quartet and Beethoven’s ‘Serioso’.

The intriguing textures of STRUM achieve a sublime effect of space. Jessie Montgomery writes that the piece ‘draws on American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement’, displaying ‘a narrative that begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration’. Beethoven’s Serioso quartet is densely concentrated, founded in personal despair but ultimately transcending difficulties and rising to exhilaration. And, with its bittersweet colours and innovative techniques, Ravel’s quartet is an undoubted masterpiece.

Please note that this concert takes place in the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings.
