Fiora Quartet I
Three string quartets that combine passion, intimacy, and spaciousness in the hands of the exciting Fiora Quartet.
Shostakovich’s ninth quartet is complex, rich, and effervescent. It combines honeymoon-inspired optimism with the sparsity which characterises his later works. Philip Glass’ second quartet is surtitled Company, originally conceived as a soundtrack for Fred Neumann's adaptation of Samuel Beckett's 1979 novella of that title. Typically miniature in scale, it is both introspective and passionate. This Haydn quartet ‘casts a spell of intense gravity’, with a first movement featuring over one hundred falling fifths (or ‘doorbells’) and a gradual emergence from darkness to light.
