Festival Walk I: Rendlesham Forest
For this special Festival Walk in ancient woodland, Daniel Pioro adds a musical element which invites deep listening and connection with the natural music of the forest.
“Music is about listening. Life is about listening”. Thus, Daniel Pioro invites us on a walk like no other. Inspired by the sonic meditations of the American composer Pauline Oliveros, which aimed to expand consciousness and achieve “humanitarian purposes, specifically healing”, this walk begins deep among the ancient oaks of Staverton Thicks, “Suffolk’s best-kept secret”, and continues through the woods of Rendlesham Forest. It is an exploration of Pioro’s creative process, our own innate creativity, and the place itself. It is a walk for open ears, open minds, open hearts.
The Suffolk landscape which so inspired Britten is equally stunning today, and this event draws on the nature walks that became part of the Aldeburgh Festival from the 1970s as well as the unique approach and fruitful imagination of 2024’s featured musician Daniel Pioro.
The route is approximately 3 miles long. Parking is at Snape Maltings, from where a coach will depart at 10am. (There is no parking at the start of the walk itself.) You are welcome to bring a flask and some light refreshments for the way. The coach will return you to Snape Maltings by 1.30pm in time for lunch.
