Rousing and enchanting orchestral pieces by British composers, including Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending and Arthur Bliss’ ballet score, Checkmate.

The BBC Concert Orchestra take us on a thoroughly enjoyable journey through Vaughan Williams’ sublime evocation of a lark soaring skywards and his jaunty, folk-inspired Wasps Overture. Britten’s Soirées Musicales is a delightful set of miniatures inspired by Rossini, while Walton’s Crown Imperial was commissioned for the coronation of King George VI in Westminster Abbey. In the second half we have a rare chance to hear Arthur Bliss’s fantastic chess-inspired ballet score, commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris in 1937.
