Calling all cyclists!

Bring your ‘pedal power’ to a performance at the Aldeburgh Festival.

Wednesday 1, Friday 3 & Saturday 4 June 2022

All the power needed for our performance Houses Slide will be generated solely by the pedal power of 17 cyclists. Britten Pears Arts, which runs the Aldeburgh Festival, is inviting keen Suffolk cyclists who would like to take part in rehearsals throughout the week and the performance to get in touch to volunteer and make their Aldeburgh Festival debut in June.

Matthew Walker, one of the producers at Britten Pears Arts, said: “We are looking for people who have a reasonable level of fitness, but you certainly don’t have to be an elite cyclist. Houses Slide encourages all of us to think of interesting and fun ways we can address one of the great challenges of our time”.

What will cyclists do?

Together with 16 other cyclists you will be generating the power for the stage lighting, amplification and electronics required to perform Houses Slide. You will be cycling on a stationary bicycle on stage during rehearsals or performance. One of your fellow cyclists will be solo singer Jessica Aszodi who will be performing her part from her bicycle. During the performance you will be under the direction of our conductor Sian Edwards, along with the London Sinfonietta players.

How physically challenging will it be?

Due to the number of cyclists working together, the pedalling demand on each individual cyclist is, whilst constant, relatively light work. There will be a gauge on stage for you to see how much power is being generated at any moment compared to what we need to keep the performance running.

How long will I need to cycle for?

During rehearsals, you will be cycling for up to 90 minutes at a time. The performance itself will last roughly 40 mins. You will be asked to cycle constantly at all times in order to generate the required amount of power for the performance.

Where will the rehearsals and performance take place?

The rehearsals and performance will take place in the Britten Studio at Snape Maltings. We are looking for people who can make all of the rehearsal sessions and the performance listed below:

  • Friday 3 June, 11:00-14:00

  • Saturday 4 June, 19:00-20:00
