19 - 26 July 2025

“I learnt so much, and played better than I have ever been able to play before. I really feel that I levelled up in that one week.”

Britten Pears Young Artist 2024-25

Is this course for me?

Creating new and interesting programmes is an invaluable skill for any artist, needed for work on the concert stage, preparation for auditions & for success in competitions. This course is designed to help early-career singers and collaborative pianists explore and reassess their approach to the recital programme. Young artists will be able to work on song repertoire that excites them the most and the course will focus on finding interesting ways to programme this music with new, perhaps unfamiliar, repertoire.

Who will work with me?

The course will be led by acclaimed baritone Roderick Williams, known for his expert approach and interpretation of repertoire from the baroque to new music, alongside Malcolm Martineau, a leading collaborative pianist of his generation and artistic director of the Oxenfoord International Summer School. They are joined by Julia Faulkner, one of the world's leading voice teachers.

What can I expect on this course?

This course will include public masterclasses, private tuition from the course tutors and group sessions from industry professionals will cover topics including career advice and support around musicians’ health and wellbeing. The week will culminate in a concert to showcase a work-in-progress recital programme from each duo.

You will be encouraged to bring repertoire to the course that interests you, but also be open to trying new things. You will receive coaching on how to make a unique, varied programme work, both artistically & technically. Developing your flexibility and versatility by performing music of different languages and styles will be a fundamental element of the course. Singers will be expected to work on repertoire using at least three different languages.

You should expect to be challenged, inspired and reinvigorated as a performer.

You will need to be at Snape Maltings for the full duration of the course, 19 - 26 July 2025.

As with all BPYAP courses, there are no course fees, we will cover travel costs, accommodation and provide most meals. Additionally, we have a small budget to provide financial support, including help with childcare costs or removing barriers to access.
